Eastham is where the Outer Cape begins. This narrow strip of land is bordered on the east by the open Atlantic Ocean and on the west by the more protected part of the ocean called the Cape Cod Bay. Eastham's expansive town conservation areas such as The Cape Cod National Seashore Park and Massachusetts Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary have some of the most valued and accessible nature experiences of all the surrounding states. Explore Eastham's wooded trails, rail bike trails, salt marches, ocean, protected bays and fresh water ponds. Fishing, camping, walking or biking trails, boating, swimming, and sunbathing are just a few of the outdoor activities available. There are several town beaches, as well as, the National Seashore beaches in Eastham. Coast Guard Beach is rated in the top 10 beaches nationally. First Encounter Beach in Eastham holds an important place in history. The first meeting between the Pilgrims and the American Indians took place at this site in 1620. You can enjoy a picnic and the magnificent sunsets at South Sunkenmeadow Beach where you swim, read or at low tide you can walk the flats. South Sunken Meadow Beach is a short walk -about 2 lots- from By the Bay Bed & Breakfast.
